To be a good parent, you must be able to listen to your children. Ask them questions and do everything you can to make your child understand he or she can talk to you openly. This is a great way to lay the foundation for the future. If your children feel comfortable talking to you about trivial things, they will be able to talk to you when serious matters arise.

Clear off a space on the kitchen counter, lay your child back on a rolled towel, and run water from the faucet over the hair and scalp. Over time, this may make a toddler more receptive to the idea of being submerged or doused with water.

An important part of effective parenting is finding time to praise your children for their good behavior. Children naturally crave attention. If they don’t receive attention when they show good behavior, then they may try to get it with bad behavior. Parents who fail to provide their children with positive attention on appropriate occasions are actually encouraging potentially bad behavior.

Set a goal to save each year and the money will add up quickly. Remember, this savings is for college and not to be dipped into, which is tempting, but it’s usually hard to pay back.

It is a good thing for your child to get involved with after-school programs, such as sports. Activities like these will help your child to make friends and become more socially active, which are important skills to have as an adult. Keeping your children busy with after-school programs will also stop them from getting into trouble instead.

Having another child will force you to spend time with one child more than the other. Dividing your attention between your two children will be the hardest. If you are able to understand that your attention will not always be split equally, you will be able to avoid feelings of guilt.

Put a chart up on a wall, if you are tying to get your child to accomplish something. For example, if you divide a chart into 24 squares, you can fill one of the squares with a sticker each time your child completes the new task. When your child fills up his chart, reward him. This chart lets your child visualize successes, and it helps keep your child motivated since he or she will know a reward is coming when the chart is filled.

Try putting yourself in your child’s shoes when he or she presents a problem they are having to you. While a broken crayon seems like a trivial concern to an adult, it can carry a great deal of disappointment for a child.

When your toddler reaches 3 feet tall or can climb out of his or her crib, it is probably time to make the change to a toddler bed. This can be a scary experience for your toddler; make this change as enjoyable as possible, like buying new bed linens featuring your child’s favorite characters.

Your child should witness you enjoying a variety of healthy fruits, veggies and whole grains. Your kids will learn from your example and follow you in choosing healthy foods over empty calories.

When you will be traveling a far distance from home, stop often if you have kids with you to keep them active and happy. Although it might seem like getting to your destination quickly is the best decision, taking things slow and recognizing the needs of everyone in the vehicle can really salvage the trip. You can stop by a park, a restaurant or a rest area, and allow the children to run around and get out some of their bottled up energy.

When dealing with a child’s difficult behavior, always use positive reinforcement. It is essential to keep in mind that some children keep heavy emotions inside, and they may not understand how to express those feelings in the right way. The most effective way to help such children is to demonstrate proper behavior and praise them for repeating it.

Set aside some of your toddler’s toys so that you can begin rotating them in and out of circulation. The interest span of a toddler usually only lasts a couple days. If you rotate toys they will seem new to the toddler and you will not have to buy them all of the time.

When you learn new things about parenting, you learn new skills and can gain new strategies that you did not know. No matter what stage of parenting you are in, you can always learn new parenting information.
