As a parent you want to see your child succeed. Early academics may seem like the way to put them on the path to success. The media tend to tout this. But child development professionals do not. The child under 6 or 7 needs lots of running and playing (large motor activity) to develop his or her brain and learning potential. Early reading does not lead to later academic success.

When administering medication to your child, be sure to base the dosage on his weight rather than his age. The effectiveness of the medication is dependent on your child’s size more than his age. This is especially important for children who are over or under weight for their age. Always consult with your doctor if you are unsure of the dosage.

If your infant is having a difficult time sleeping, swaddling can help. When you swaddle a baby you wrap them tightly in a blanket. This gives them a safe, womb-like feel. It is a wonderful way to soothe a child and help her to transition to sleep.

Provide your child with a variety of opportunities for sensory development. From sniffing spices as you make cookies to playing in squishy mud, he or she will revel in the opportunity to learn more about the world. Be on the lookout for items with interesting textures, colors, shapes, smells and tastes that you can share with your child.

An important tip to consider when parenting is to focus on the positive as a way to improve the negative. This is important because the best way for someone to learn is by means of positive reinforcement. Use the positives and build on good habits from there.

Being a parent of a teen isn’t easy, but to make it a little easier, you probably should get to know who their friends are. Invite them over for dinner, and get a feel for the type of people they are. It’s better to get to know their friends and make the effort rather than just flat out refusing them, “just because.”

When you’re trying to get an older toddler or child excited about their car seat, let them help you choose it. You can let your child pick the color, or the pattern, or sometimes even the style of seat. Doing this will help ensure that they want to sit in their “special seat” and can mean less traveling battles.

An important tip to consider in terms of parenting is to begin the learning process with them as early as possible. Even if you think it is too early for them to completely grasp some of the concepts you are talking about, it will at least introduce them to the idea and give them a head start.

To become a better parent you may want to think of taking classes or even starting your own discussion groups with friends. Sharing experiences and coming up with new ways to handle situations can be beneficial to you. Maybe, you can even teach the other parents a thing or two about your parenting style.

parenting can obviously be tough, so it’s important that parents are always attempting to actively listen to the needs of their children. Just listening isn’t enough. Active listening will open up a dialogue and allow the kid to feel comfortable sharing what’s on his or her mind. This is a great problem-solving technique.

You are likely to get very little thanks and appreciation from your child when you set boundaries for them, but you can take comfort in the knowledge that it is in their best interest. You are going to raise a child that knows that life is not all about doing what they want all the time.
